A mattress is a fundamental component of any bed to promote good sleep.

Mattresses can cost anywhere from ‘£100 to £3,000’ or more depending on the manufacturer and type of mattress that you opt for.

When moving house with a mattress, it’s essential to pack your mattress properly in order to protect your investment.

Failure to pack your mattress properly will likely result in your mattress becoming damaged in transit, and could even result in it needing to be replaced, which is why leaving the packing process to the professionals is advisable.

That said, there are a few steps you can carry out before the removal company arrive to make sure the process is as seamless as possible on the day of the move.

How to pack a mattress

Mattresses can cost anywhere from ‘£100 to £3,000’ or more depending on the manufacturer and type of mattress that you opt for.

To pack a mattress for moving, it is best to:

  1. Remove the mattress from the bed
  2. Carefully clean the mattress
  3. Clear the way for the removal company
  4. Allow the removal company to pack your mattress

1. Remove The Mattress From The Bed

Before you can begin cleaning your mattress, you’ll first need to remove the mattress from the bed.

Place your mattress on the ground. If you’re doing this alone and aren’t strong enough to lift the mattress yourself, slide your mattress carefully from the bed frame to the ground, as you don’t want to hurt yourself during the process.

Once the mattress is on the ground, you can then set about cleaning your mattress.

2. Carefully Clean The Mattress

Now your mattress is easily accessible, you will now need to carefully clean the mattress ahead of the move.

This is especially important if you intend to put your mattress into storage for a longer period of time.

While many people like to deep clean their mattresses, you should never wash it just before it is placed in a mattress bag. This comes down to the fact that moisture can damage your mattress and lead to mould growth, especially if you intend to store a mattress long term in an enclosed bag.

As such, it’s best to use a vacuum cleaner during this step, and you can even use an upholstery attachment to remove any dust, dirt, or hair left on the mattress.

You’ll also want to inspect the mattress for any stains and take pictures, as this will help you to better determine whether any stains are acquired during the moving process.

Cleaning the mattress in good time before the removal company arrive is important to ensure it is ready for them to pack.

3. Clear The Way For The Removal Company

Next, you’ll need to clear the way for the removal company so that they can easily access your mattress.

You want the path to be clear and free of boxes. You will also need to manoeuvre any furniture out of the way that could obstruct the path for the removal company during the moving process.

This will help to ensure that they can easily get to your mattress, pack it, and remove it without being in danger of tripping over.

4. Allow The Removal Company To Pack Your Mattress
