how to pack a bed for moving

If you are moving house, you will almost definitely have a bed you need to move or store. However, the size and complex components of a bed can complicate the process. Use this guide to learn how to pack and prepare your bed for moving like the experts in just five simple steps:

  1. Hire a removals team.
  2. Wash and pack sheets.
  3. Clean mattress.
  4. Dismantle bed.
  5. Prepare for move.

1. Hire a Removals Team

Before you even think about packing your bed, it is important to know who will be moving it. To pick a reliable removals team, we’d recommend that you read up on Google Reviews as these are often an indicator of how reliable a service is; the better and more consistent the reviews are, the better the service.

This is also a good time to consider if you will need storage facilities. If you have too much stuff for your new place, or you haven’t had time to get rid of old furniture, then you can use a purpose-built storage unit to keep your belongings safe and secure while you get sorted. 2. Strip, Wash and Pack Bedsheets, Pillows & Protectors

Next, you should strip, wash and pack bedsheets, pillows and protectors on your bed as close to the move as possible. If you have multiple sets, you can get them ready earlier – just as long as you have one clean set on your bed to sleep on.

Once your sheets have dried through, you can pack them. To keep them clean while you move, we’d recommend putting them in a box lined with linen or clean bag. Better yet, you can vacuum pack your sheets to save space and keep them free from dust and moisture.

3. Clean Mattress

If you’re just moving a mattress from one place to another, it isn’t a huge deal if your mattress isn’t sparkling clean. However, mattresses do collect dirt and grime over time, so it’s never a bad idea to give it a good clean – it is nice to start fresh in your new home after all. This great video from HomeTalk walks you through how to clean your mattress with just three household ingredients.

At Falconers, when we move your mattress, we will sometimes put a polythene cover on a mattress to keep it safe. For long-term storage, we’ll use a quilted mattress protector.

4. Dismantle Bed

This step depends on the type of bed – if you have a divan, for example, it is often just made of two parts that are pushed together and can therefore be dismantled with ease.

However, if your bed is a four post, has slats and bolts, or is an electric bed, this can get complicated and will take you much longer. It is often then best for you to ask if your removals team will dismantle it for you. At Falconer Removals we will determine on the initial consultation if it is best for us to dismantle your bed, which we’ll keep safe and reassemble on the other side.

That being said, if you do choose to dismantle the bed yourself, make sure you keep the parts safe, secure and clearly labelled. We’d recommend that you put them in a small plastic box and keep them attached to the bed – or in a bedside cabinet that will be in the same room when you move.

5. Prepare for Move

At this point, the rest is down to us. However, you should ensure that your movers have sufficient access and information before your bed can be moved. This includes enough room for a large van to load, and access to codes or keys that they’ll need before their arrival.
