The best time to move house is January. Although it can vary from year to year, the first 2 weeks of January tend to be the quietest time for house removals and therefore you will experience a lot more flexibility and ease during your move.
Secondly, January tends to be a great time for low traffic on UK roads making your house move all the more relaxed and time efficient.
However, we have been in house removals for decades and we understand that its not as simple as picking a month and going for it. There’s a reason for moving house and sometimes those reasons are time-constrained, so if January doesn’t work, here are some times of the year to avoid:
Just Before Christmas
Late November and the lead up to Christmas is crazy for removals. Families want to move and get settled before popping up the Christmas tree and others find sudden urges to start the new year with a fresh start.
If you can, try and move house before mid November to save time and money.
Last 6 Months of the Year
If January is too early, you’ll always have a better experience from February to July than the second half of the year. This avoid the end of the school holidays and Christmas.
The Last Friday of the Month
This is one most people don’t know about. Solicitors tend to save their transactions until the final Friday of each month for financial reasons. This means it could be more difficult to get contracts exchanged in time and could delay getting access to those all important keys.
End of School Holidays
The school holidays in general are an attractive period for moving house, whether its the long days, the warm weather or no school run – there are many reasons families love to move during July and August.
If you are moving during the school holidays for any of these reasons, always avoid the final week of August. This is when most families will wrap up the holidays and get moving to their new home ready to start school.
