Demand for secure storage has boomed over the past few weeks. With many new clients asking for advice on the best way to pack up their house to save time and money, I decided to summarise some essential tips into 4 key pointers.
The process for packing for removals and storage is very similar, you just need to be more ruthless with storage as it will save you money.
4 tips for packing up a house for storage:
- Be Ruthless – Don’t store what you don’t need, it will cost you.
- Pack Efficiently – Use large boxes over small shoe boxes.
- Keep a Smalls Bag – Keep all small components and pieces in a dedicated bag.
- Newspaper Works Just Fine – Don’t fork out on expensive white paper for your fragile pieces.
Let’s break down those tips in more detail…
Be Ruthless
If you haven’t used an item for at least 2 years, its ready to go. Put simply, the more belongings you store, the more containers you will require. Less belongings means less cost to you.
Pack Efficiently
I always advise clients to avoid shoe boxes because it results in more for me to carry – especially when there are 2 or 3 flights of stairs. Get boxes from us which we provide free, these are designed to offer maximum capacity and efficiency.
Make sure your boxes are full. If you’re looking to store for more than 12 months, we also recommend vacuum packing your clothes to save space. We do provide wardrobe boxes which are just as efficient though.
Collect Small Pieces
Beds and other large furniture items often require small bolts and joints which can easily be lost before we arrive. We are happy to dismantle beds and wardrobes for you and will keep all small pieces in a bag with the correct furniture. If you are dismantling your own furniture, make sure you keep all small pieces in a bag of your own, and keep it safe.
Newspaper Works Just Fine
We often have clients purchasing expensive white paper for their china, but if you’re wondering how to pack crockery, newspaper will be more than fine. Just crumple up a few pieces of paper and stuff them in the bottom of the box to offer a supportive first layer.
