To store hangers when you move,
- Separate hangers by type.
- Recycle or donate extra hangers.
- Bundle hangers and secure with ties.
- Consider using wardrobe boxes.
We’d advise that you do this after you have arranged how you are going to move and/or store your clothes, shoes, and other items in your wardrobe.
Here’s those steps, broken down in more detail.
1. Separate Hangers by Type
Plastic, wood, wire, fabric, velvet, steel, cardboard…you name it, there’s a hanger made from it. Start by separating your hangers by material and size — this will make it easier to organise and move them in the next steps.
2. Recycle or Donate Extra Hangers
We are all guilty of holding on to hangers when they are well past their prime. Broken or otherwise ruined hangers should be recycled before you move, and any extras can be donated to friends, charity shops or other places that could benefit (dry cleaners might take your spare hangers, for example).
3. Bundle and Secure Hangers
Now you’ve whittled down your hanger collection and organised them into distinct piles, it’s time to prepare them for the move. Take a handful of hangers from one pile (we’d reccomend no more than 5-10 depending on the material), and stack them on top of one another.
Secure each of these bundles with cable ties, elastic bands, cord or rope, starting with the bottom bars and then moving up to the “necks” where the tie should be secured.
We would also reccomend that you wrap the bundles in a sheet or a blanket. This makes them easier to move, as well as offers additional protection against scratches, cracks and breaks. You can also wrap wire hooks in shrink wrap, to ensure they don’t cause damage to your other items.
These can then just go in a cardboard box or other storage container that have roughly the same diameter.
4. Consider Wardrobe Boxes
Wardrobe boxes include a robust plastic hanging rail, which is designed to pack clothing straight from your wardrobe. If you’re using wardrobe boxes, hangers can therefore remain on clothes, and these can then be moved direct from wardrobe to box to wardrobe with relative ease.
Too short on space, time or cash to get wardrobe boxes? Try the bin bag trick. Take a clean bin bag, poke a small hole in the bottom and pull the bag over your hanging clothes. Tie the hooks together at the top, and you have a makeshift clothes bundle!
