How to Stay Calm when Moving House

Moving house is one of the top three most stressful times of your life. And this is what drives us and motivates us to deliver the best removals service in South Wales – we love using our decades of experience to make moving house an enjoyable experience.

Over those years we’ve noted some seriously effective methods of staying calm during your house move.

How to stay calm when moving house in 5 steps:

  1. Hire an experienced removals team
  2. Hire an experienced solicitor
  3. Label your boxes
  4. Pick a realistic moving date
  5. Declutter well beforehand

1. Hire an experienced removals team

Now of course this was going to be number 1, because it’s simply true. We’ve been called to last minute moves after a cowboy removals team has been hired last minute – so check reviews, ask for recommendations and pick wisely.

You may be tempted to carry out the move yourself or hire a ‘man with a van’, especially if you don’t have too many items and whilst that may be tempting, it all too easily ends up in a huge amount of stress. This is because large, bulky and complicated items can only be moved properly by those who have done it thousands of times for homes just like yours.

Be realistic with what you can do yourself and what should be left to the professionals.

At Falconer Removals, we do so much more than just move and store your items on the day. We offer advice and step-by-step guides on everything from dealing with solicitors to navigating the day of completion. For us it’s not about just moving items, it’s about ensuring you start your new life as calmly as possible.

2. Hire an experienced solicitor

We’ve dealt with good solicitors and bad solicitors and you will only ever have a calm house move with a good solicitor. Follow the same methodology as in tip number 1:

  • Ask friends and colleagues for recommendations
  • Check Google reviews
  • Prepare questions for that first enquiry call

The key moment will be on the day of completion, solicitors have great influence over when you get the keys and when you can move into your new home so be sure to find someone with experience in house moves.

3. Label your boxes

And label every single box – this will ensure complete calm when unpacking. The last thing you want is to have to navigate through dozens of anonymous boxes, hoping they ended up in the right room.

It’s something that takes little time, but is so often forgotten – labelling your boxes is an essential step for a calm house move.

Make sure you label your boxes with two pieces of information:

  1. Brief description of what’s inside
  2. Which room the box needs to be in

Your removals team will thank you, and you’ll be calm and thanking yourself when you save hours on unpacking your possessions.

4. Pick a realistic moving date

The simple idea here is to pick a moving date which is completely clear 3 days before and after that chosen date in your calendar – whilst you may not even require a whole week from start to finish, having a day or two to relax and wind down can make for a 100% calm house move.

When picking a moving date, consider the following:

  1. Will you be able to book time off work?
  2. Are there any public holidays which could cause traffic?
  3. Are there certain days where friends or family could lend a helping hand?
  4. Is the moving date realistic for your removals company?
  5. Does the moving date suit the previous owners of your new home?
  6. Can you avoid the final Friday of the month? This tends to be the most popular day for completion.

Answer these questions when choosing your moving date and you will stay calm when moving house.

5. Declutter well beforehand

The last thing any working person wants to do is to fill their precious weekend with decluttering, so we have a modern solution: the packing party.

The essential steps to a packing party are:

  1. At least one month before moving house, pick out any items you don’t use every day and pack them into boxes.
  2. As you go about your day, remove items that you need to use and place them back in their normal place in the home after using them.
  3. After 3 or so weeks, donate or sell anything left in those boxes.

The idea is to remove the assumption of “I might need that someday” when realistically the item hardly ever gets used.

Don’t worry, I can’t remember buying half the clothes I own but they still stack up. A packing party is easy integrates easily into your day.
