Perfume can be expensive, and it often comes in a fragile glass bottle that can smash or spill when being transported. Heat can also break down the fragrance, and warp or melt plastic bottles, so it needs to be kept kept cool when you move. This can make it difficult to move perfume from one location to another — but it’s not impossible.
To pack perfume for moving,
- Sort through your perfumes.
- Store in original box, if you have it.
- Wrap in protective materials.
- Store in a larger, robust box.
1. Sort Through Perfumes
First things first, sort through your perfumes and determine which ones you want to keep. If there are scents that have expired, lost their scent or just run out, get rid of them. For perfumes that you never wear, give them to friends or neighbours. If you have unopened bottles, donate, sell or re-gift them.
For bottles with a small amount of perfume left, try to use them before your move or transfer them to a travel perfume container to save on space.
Decluttering before you move, in general, helps ensure a stress-free move and a real fresh start in your new place.
It’s worth mentioning that your go-to perfume — the one you wear on a regular or day-to-day basis — should be stored in an essentials bag or box, so you have access to it during your move.
Now that you’ve sorted your collection, you can begin to pack.
2. Store in Original Box
The best method to store your perfume is in its original box, if you have it. These boxes are designed to guarantee a snug fit, which means that your perfume will be kept safe and secure during the move. That being said, because it will be on the move, we would advise that you add some extra padding in the box (bubble wrap or crumpled paper) to cushion the glass, and prevent it from shifting when in transit.
3. Wrap in Protective Materials
If you haven’t got the original box, or a box that fits your perfume, you should wrap the bottle in protective materials. Wrap each bottle in several layers of packing paper and bubble wrap, and secure this with tape.
You should also seal the bottle, so the perfume doesn’t spill. You can either use tape to seal the caps, or a small piece of plastic wrap over the bottle opening (under the cap), depending on the type of applicator your perfume has.
4. Store in a Larger, Robust Box
Next, pack your perfumes into a larger, sturdier container. If the bottles are packed in their original box, just wedge the boxes between soft items (clothing, bedding etc.) in a suitcase or box. If they aren’t, you should store them in a toiletry or travel organizer with other cosmetics and accessories, and then wedge them between thick clothes.
Whatever you store your perfume bottles in, just make sure they won’t move in transit, and that the bottom of the container is secure — e.g. that the bottom of your cardboard box is taped up, and won’t collapse at any point.
For extra long moves that will take several days, in particular where your perfumes are more likely to be exposed to heat and humid conditions, you might want to consider an ice box. According to Ethan Greenfield, polystyrene ice boxes are watertight and offer excellent insulation for temperature-sensitive items, like perfume bottles.
For extra protection, be sure to label your boxes with “FRAGILE” so your chosen removals team know to handle that box with additional care.
And voilà! Your perfume bottles are packed for a safe and secure move. Our last bit of advice? Hire a removals team. Moving house is one of the more stressful times in our lives, but an expert removals team can alleviate some (if not all) of this pressure.
