If you’re a fisherman, you’ll know how complicated it can be to move and store your fishing rods. Not to mention that it needs to be done well in order to keep your fragile rods in mint condition. This is even more important when fishing rods are sentimental or expensive – some of the high-end rods can cost above £1,000 alone.
To prevent long-term damage and pack fishing rods for moving like the experts,
- Hire an experienced removals team.
- Protect your fishing rods with a thin layer of bubble wrap.
- Put in a cardboard tube, pool noodle, or a special rod case.
- Label and mark with fragile stickers.
- Prepare for your movers.
1. Hire an Experienced Removals Team

This is also a good time to consider if you will need storage. You can use a purpose-built storage unit to keep your rods safe and secure if, for whatever reason, you don’t want to take them all to your new home.
2. Protect Fishing Rods
Next, wrap each individual fishing rod in a thin layer of bubble wrap and secure it with tape.
You should also wrap the individual parts that wont fit in your storage container in bubble wrap, and then put them in a labelled bag to keep them safe. This will help prevent scratches, breakages and other damage to your rod while it is in transit.
3. Put In a Cardboard Tube, Pool Noodle, or Special Rod Case
Once your rod is in bubble wrap, you can transfer it to a special rod case, a cardboard tube, or a pool noodle – yes, really!
Special Rod Case
The safest way to pack & move fishing equipment is in a rod case, designed to store and move your fishing rods with ease. That being said, you might not have one of these on hand, so you can use a cardboard tube or pool noodle instead.
Cardboard Tube
To store your fishing rod in a cardboard tube, first put a circle of bubble wrap at the base of the tube. Then, slide your bubble wrapped fishing rod in. When it is in snug, fill the gaps around the fishing rod with bubble wrap to secure it in place. This should include another small circle of bubble wrap on the top of the rod. When you’re done, place the end caps on both sides of the cardboard tube and tape them down.
To make sure your fishing rod is adequately protected, give the container a gentle shake. If you can hear the rod, go back in and add more protective materials to the top, bottom and sides.
Pool Noodle
You can even get creative and use a pool noodle! As LetsCampS’More explains: cut a slit the long way down the side of a pool noodle, place your fishing pole into the slit so that is in the middle of the pool noodle, and then place the hook into the side of the pool noodle… and voila! A quick and secure unit to move your rod in.
Premade Rod Storage Unit
If you have a rod storage unit, like the one below, you might be able to wrap your fishing rods in bubble wrap and slot them back in the premade storage unit. This can then be placed in the back of the van, or otherwise moved between two locations on foot if you haven’t got far to go.
4. Label and Mark as Fragile
Put “fragile” markers on your fishing rod container using a marker, labels, or stickers. This reminds you, and your movers, that you need to move these with additional care.
5. Prepare for Movers
You should also ensure that your movers have sufficient access before your fishing rods and other items are collected; they will normally need enough room for a large van to load. You should also give them any access codes or keys they might need before their arrival.
