How to Move Garden Pots

When we think about moving house, we often think about our indoor furniture and decorations, but neglect to remember our outdoors garden pots and tools. Regardless of how attached you feel to these items, it is important to ensure you move them when you leave your home as you could be subject to fines or complaints if these are left behind.

How to Move Garden Pots

Depending on how heavy-duty your garden pots are, the moving process should be quite simple.

Our first bit of advise is that if your plants are in expensive or china/clay pots, repot them into shatter-proof plastic pots before the move. When this is done, pack the empty pot with packing paper or newspaper and wrap in a few layers of bubble wrap. Your pot can then go into a heavy-duty cardboard box for additional protection and an easy move.

If your garden pots do have plants and soil in them, cover the top of the pot with newspaper (secured with tape) to stop the soil from spilling out. You can also wrap the base of your plant in a plastic bag to avoid dirt spilling out – but don’t cover the whole plant. We’d also recommend that you wrap the pot in bubble wrap as best as you can.

If your pots are hard to move, hire a removals team to help you move them and your other items; when in doubt, it is always best to leave it to an expert.

How to Move Other Garden Supplies

To move your other garden supplies, you should first clean and dust your tools to avoid dirt and grime from being transferred to your other items (and new home).

Once this is done, bundle and wrap all long-handled tools (rakes, brooms, shovels) together and secure with rope. For additional protection, wrap the bundle of tools in a blanket or another protective cover and secure with tape. If these tools have sharp edges or ends, make sure to wrap these in a good amount of bubble wrap.

Handheld tools should be locked inside toolboxes, and medium-sized garden tools (spanners, hammers, pliers) can be stored in a similar, secure box. As with the long-handled tools, all garden tools with sharp edges or blades can be wrapped in newspaper and then bubble wrap for additional protection.

Attachments should also be removed from power tools and packed separate to your other garden supplies. As above, all sharp or dangerous edges should be covered with protective materials.
