When moving house, moving a fish tank is a very delicate process and needs to be carefully planned weeks, if not months in advance. To make things easier, we created a step-by-step guide based on decades of experience.
This is how you move a fish tank:
- Prepare months in advance – fish get stressed easily (especially tropical fish) so try not to purchase any new fish weeks, or ideally better months before your move date.
- Make sure the keys are ready – we have had customers arrive at a new house and not gain access for hours. Make sure you’ve arranged a specific time to collect the keys, this will reduce the time in which the fish are in transport.
- Empty the tank completely of all water, sand and rocks – Past clients have decided to transport their fish in their own car where they can monitor the water temperature.
- Fish tank sizes vary, but if your tank is larger than the standard 5-foot tank, consider removing door stops and even doors if necessary.
- Use packing material – most fish tanks are double layered but can still be damaged easily so be prepared to use some packing materials.
- Ensure there’s no room to move – during transportation, make sure the tank can’t slide around and is fixed in position.
Keep note of these steps when you arrive at your new home, you may find you need to repeat them in reverse order when moving the tank into the house.
