From your duvet to pillows to blankets, bedding can be large and bulky, and it can be difficult to know what is the right way to pack bedding.
Failure to pack your bedding in the right way when moving house can lead to moisture, mould growth, and even damage if you’re not careful.
To pack bedding for a move, you will need to:
- Clean and organise your bedding
- Prepare the right size cardboard boxes
- Pack your bedding into plastic bags for extra protection and add to boxes
- Secure boxes with tape
- Label boxes
1. Clean & Organise Your Bedding
To begin, you will first need to clean and organise your bedding. Moving house is the ideal time to sort through your bedding and get rid of any pieces that are old and unwanted before moving to your new home.
It’s essential that you clean your bedding before packing it away, as dirty sheets contain bacteria that should not be allowed to fester.
In fact, a study found that ‘unwashed pillow cases and sheets had up to 39 times more bacteria than pet-food bowls and several thousand times more bacteria than a toilet seat’, emphasising just how important it is to clean your bedding.
As such, cleaning your bedding is essential before packing it for a move, and is especially important if you plan to store your bedding for a longer period of time.
Additionally, you will need to ensure that your bedding is completely dry before you pack it away to prevent moisture and mould growth within the box.

3. Pack Your Bedding Into Plastic Bags For Extra Protection & Add To Boxes
While you won’t need to pad your boxes as your bedding is already soft, you will need to pack your bedding into plastic bags for an extra layer of protection.
This comes down to the fact that keeping your bedding in plastic bags will help to protect them from any moisture and damage should the bedding be stored in a humid environment. Traditional bin bags or larger storage bags work fine and are very cost-efficient for this step.
While this isn’t an essential step if you intend to move in straight away, it’s highly advised if you intend to store your bedding for a longer period of time.
Keeping your bedding in plastic bags will help to protect them from any moisture and damage should the bedding be stored in a humid environment.
4. Secure Boxes With Tape
Next, you will need to secure each of your boxes with packing tape.
This will help to ensure that your bedding remains secure within the boxes during transit.
5. Label Boxes
Last, but not least, you will need to clearly label your boxes.
For instance, you can label your boxes with ‘Bedding Bedroom 1’, ‘Pillows Bedroom 1’, or ‘Bedroom 1’, as this will help to indicate to the removal company where your boxes need to be placed.
