With the global board game sales projected to reach $6.47 billion in 2025, there’s no denying that board games are highly popular.
If you’re a big fan of board games, it’s likely that you have an extensive collection that you need to pack before a house move.
If you don’t pack your board games properly ahead of moving house, you could risk them becoming damaged or losing different parts and pieces of your games if you’re not careful.
To pack board games for moving, you will need to:
- Sort and select which board games you want to keep
- Dust the board games
- Prepare the board games
- Tape the board games shut
- Pack the board games in boxes
- Tape and label the boxes
1. Sort & Select Which Board Games You Want To Keep
Moving into a new house is a great opportunity to get rid of any old games that you no longer want or need.
As such, the first step you will need to carry out when packing board games is to sort and select which board games you want to keep.
Begin by sorting your board games into piles. You will want a ‘Keep’ pile, a ‘Donate’ pile, and a ‘Discard’ pile.
To determine which games belong in which piles, you’ll need to go through and check the quality of each game as well as the pieces inside.
Games that are still in good condition, but you no longer want, can be donated. If there are any games that are old and tattered, and also have missing pieces, then these ones aren’t worth donating and can be added to the ‘Discard’ pile.
With the global revenue of board game sales ‘expected to hit $12 billion in 2023’, there’s no denying that board games are highly popular.
2. Dust The Board Games
If you’ve got a lot of old board games that have been sitting on your shelf or in storage for a long time, then it’s likely that they’ll be quite dusty.
As such, once you’ve organised the board games into piles, you will need to dust the board games you intend to keep and donate.
Dusting them ahead of the move will ensure that they are nice and clean before you attempt to pack them into boxes for the new house.
Failure to dust the board games will also make it harder for you to tape and secure the games at a later stage as the dust will simply stick to the tape, so it’s an important step.
3. Prepare The Board Games
Next, you will need to prepare the board games ready for moving house.
You don’t want any of your board game pieces to get lost in transit. That said, it’s a good idea to open each board game that you intend to keep and bag up the pieces to ensure that the various pieces for each game are safe and secure.
Make sure to do this a game at a time to ensure you don’t accidentally mix the pieces up.
If the bags that the pieces originally came in have gone, you can buy resealable bags that are relatively inexpensive.
Sealing the small pieces in bags will not only keep them safe whilst you’re moving house, but will also keep them organised for the new home.
Games that are still in good condition, but you no longer want, can be donated.
4. Tape The Board Games Shut
Once you’ve organised the board games, it’s time to tape them shut with packing tape.
This is an essential step to ensure the boxes cannot open in the removal van, and so that the precaution you took in the last step isn’t wasted.
5. Pack The Board Games
Next, you will need to pack the board games on top of each other in a good quality box.
It’s a good idea to stack the board games to fill as much of the box as possible to reduce movement.
That said, if there’s any space at the top left, pack the rest of the box with packing paper to help prevent the games from moving or becoming damaged in transit.
6. Tape & Label The Boxes
Lastly, you will need to tape the boxes shut and label them.
Be sure to label them ‘Board Games’ and include the name of the room you’d like them moved to, such as ‘Living Room’.
This will clearly indicate to the removal company where to place the boxes during the move.
If there’s any space at the top of the box left, pack the rest of the box with packing paper to help prevent the games from moving or becoming damaged in transit.
