1. Hire a Professional Removals Team

2. Wrap and Protect the Bannisters
If you choose not to hire a removals team, or if you want to put additional measures in place before their arrival, we’d recommend that you wrap or cover your bannisters. These are susceptible to damage when moving furniture, in particular if your stairs are slim or have a tight turn.
3. Cover the Stairs
Next, cover the stairs. This step is dependent on the kind of stairs you have:
Wood Stairs
If you have wood stairs, start with a rug or blanket, taped down with painter’s tape. This will protect your stairs if anything gets dropped. As for spills or dirt on your mover’s shoes, this can be remedied with a self-adhesive plastic film on top of the rug/blanket. Make sure you have a non-slip film to avoid accidents, though.

4. Cover Furniture

How to Protect Carpet When Moving
As you might have gathered, a protective polythene sheet that covers the carpet will keep it protected when you move. Make sure this covers all the carpet, so there is no chance of damage.
Although your carpet will have some natural wear and tear over the years, it is not often that you move large furniture over it. It’s important to take these measures then, to avoid preventable and long-term damage to your carpet that you would have avoided up until now.
How to Protect Your Walls When Moving Furniture
To protect your walls during the move, start by taking all of your pictures down – it’s worth looking into an antique removal service if your art is of particular value, as this will ensure your treasured pieces are moved with additional caution and care.
Next, you should cover your walls. The most popular method to do this is with blankets or drop cloths, but you can also use thick or corrugated cardboard. You should avoid taping them on with standard tape, though, as this can leave residue or cause damage. A decent painter’s tape is your best bet to avoid this.
On top of all this, just try to avoid the walls when you are moving furniture. This is sometimes easier said than done, but that bit of extra care and patience can prevent those scrapes and bumps that cause permanent damage.
